2012 Student Programs
Tuesday, April 17 – High School Poster Competition
Location: Lawrene Technological University
This is a great opportunity for students to win a scholarship to the college or university of their choice based on their artistic ability, without regard to GPA or financial need. Students must incorporate the SAE 2012 World Congress theme “GetConnected” into their posters. The top ten winning posters will be on display April 24-26 at the SAE 2012 World Congress at Cobo Center.

Tuesday, April 24 – Student Exhibit Competition
Location: Cobo Center, Detroit
The competition is held in conjunction with SAE 2012 World Congress, April 24-26. A limited number of exhibit spaces have been allocated to SAE collegiate chapters to display their SAE projects and to provide visibility for chapter activities. All SAE collegiate chapters worldwide can compete for cash prizes. Exhibit judging includes a formal 10-minute presentation by one or more team members and informal discussion with the judges. Student exhibits should incorporate the 2012 Congress theme, “GetConnected”. The competition offers SAE student members the opportunity for high visibility and exposure with manufacturers, suppliers and alumni.

Wednesday, May 2 – Micro-Electric Vehicle Competition
Location: Yazaki North America, Inc., Canton
The first objective of the competition is to design and build a dry cell powered vehicle (battery supplied) to race up a fixed incline while pulling a six ounce weighted trailer (supplied). The second objective is to be the first to pass the finish line with the trailer in tow. In addition, a four-minute presentation and a one-page, typed written report about the vehicle are required. Cash prizes awarded. More details to follow.

Tuesday, May 22 – Student Engineer Day
Location: Various companies
The event gives collegiate students the opportunity to spend a day on the job shadowing the routines of a practicing engineer in the student’s field of choice. This event provides the student with insight into the engineering field, and provides companies with insight into potential engineering talent. This event is “broad in scope” yet allows for individualization by placing students with engineers who have similar interests.
September TBD – Student Kickoff Dinner Meeting
Location: TBD
All eight SAE Detroit Section student chapters are invited to attend the annual Student Kickoff Dinner Meeting. The social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner starting promptly at 6:00.
The 2012/13 SAE Detroit Section student activities will be discussed and each chapter will have the opportunity to present a five-minute presentation on their SAE accomplishments and upcoming activities. In addition, an SAE International representative will speak on the upcoming SAE Collegiate Design Competitions. More details to follow.
October TBD – Formula SAE Workshop
Location: University of Michigan – Dearborn
The SAE Detroit Section will host a workshop designed to provide valuable information to make your Formula SAE design team more successful. We encourage SAE student chapters to bring their Formula SAE vehicles to discuss problems and share ideas with fellow student members. SAE student chapter members from your school, targeting students from the freshman through junior classes to assist future products should attend. More details to follow.
