Join us for a private tour back in time to explore the Cranbrook House & Gardens. In 1904, Detroit newspaper publisher and philanthropist George Gough Booth and his wife, Ellen Scripps Booth purchased a 174-acre run down farm in Bloomfield Hills, and named it Cranbrook after the English town the Booth family hailed from.
As metro-Detroit’s oldest surviving historic manor, Cranbrook House has a long and illustrious past.
The English-Tudor estate, a true Arts & Crafts style masterpiece designed by renowned Detroit architect, Albert Kahn, served as the active home for their family of seven for 40 years. From its onset, Cranbrook House also quickly became the hub from which the Booths created what would eventually become the Cranbrook Educational Community.
Today, the estate serves a dual purpose: its gardens, works of art and first-floor treasures are preserved as a testament to the Booths’ gracious lifestyle, their interest in landscape gardening and their involvement in the American Arts and Crafts movement. Its upper floors house the executive offices of Cranbrook Educational Community, the world renowned National Historic Landmark cultural center the couple created on the grounds of their country estate.
Important Note: Tour is limited to SAE members and their guests. Registration will close June 11. No onsite registration or refunds after June 7. Parking is available only on the south side of Lone Pine Road or in the Parking lot of Christ Church. There is no parking in or around Cranbrook House or the employee parking lot. There is a short walk up to the house of about 200 yards. If you have a handicapped sticker you may drive up to the house and park in the designated areas. No flash photography is permitted in the Cranbrook House.
