IIHS Behind the Scenes Student Tour
Friday, December 10
4:00 - 5:00 p.m. ET
(Complimentary Virtual Event)

In partnership with the SAE Washington DC Section, join Becky Mueller, Senior Research Engineer at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for a behind-the-scenes tour for middle and high school students. The tour will look behind the scenes at IIHS’s vehicle crash test lab, show a real crash test, and explain what it’s like to have a fun and important STEM career.

This tour will show kids how science and engineering work to improve the safety of the vehicles they ride in. They will learn about crash test dummies, see how a vehicle is prepared for testing, and learn how engineers gather data after a crash test to evaluate the vehicle’s performance. Crash tests provide a great illustration of basic physics concepts – for example, the relationship of a vehicle's weight and speed to the severity of a crash.

  • Meet the crash test dummies
  • See how a vehicle is prepared for testing
  • Watch a real crash test

After the tour, Becky will answer questions about her job and the science of crash testing.
